Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiwari’s booming success at the box office is unsurprising, given that they beat out others to be number one 2 years ago. This doesn’t only speak volumes about their talent but also indicates that there are new challenges facing cinema- including managing film budgets to account for an unexpected dip in revenue. Though past successes suggest we’re headed back in a positive direction, it’ll take time for cinema to fully recover from what brought them down.
Given these challenges, we can all revel in how this excellent triumph signals an optimistic future for Indian cinema which shows no sign of slowing down. For those who were missing these traditional reasons why people would gather around movie theatres and watch films from start till end – rejoice because our culture lives on; showcased once more by Alia & Sanjay’s latest accomplishment where the word ‘gangubai’ proves its importance even today.
So far, the period drama has already collected over Rs. 73 million rupees and will undoubtedly make much more in upcoming days. Initially it was only about movie-goers who were waiting for their regular fix of Bollywood movies at theaters; but now that word is spreading among mainstream audiences, there seems to be no end in sight for this film’s success.
This Friday’s release Jhund won’t compete with Hindi audiences, which means the second weekend will stay true to Alia Bhatt while other releases are quickly forgotten. All that matters from here on out is how well this film does financially – if it breaks even or goes beyond expectations will determine whether this project can get a sequel or not!
