The latest installment of the Drishyam franchise – which stars Ajay Devgan and Akshaye Khanna among other top Bollywood actors – made waves when it was released earlier this month to a largely positive response. The storyline follows events that were established in the first installment of the series, an idea that has led many critics to praise its creativity. In turn, viewership numbers are also steadily increasing; after earning Rs. 15.38 crore on Day 1 alone, they climbed even higher over two days following the premiere date.
This week, our box office report focuses on the performance of Drishyam 2 at the start of its commercial run. With an impressive Rs. 64.14 crore opening weekend collection, Drishyam 2 has surpassed Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 – collecting only Rs. 55.96 crore to come out as fourth highest opener for all films released in 2022 so far! Even films like KGF Chapter 2 (Rs 193 crore), Brahmastra (Rs 120 crores), and RRR (Rs 79 crores) are left behind in terms of collections but they do maintain a higher rank nonetheless because they brought more footfalls than some other films such as Ram Setu with Rs 55 crores, Samrat Prithviraj with Rs 39 crores; Gangubai Kathiawadi collected only 38 crore; Laal Singh Chaddha collected only 37 crores; and Vikram Vedha which also collected just 36 crores at the end of three weeks!
Given the current trend, Drishyam 2 has been enjoying an opening weekend collection of upwards of Rs. 60 cr comes as no surprise. In fact, trade estimates predict that the business of the film could likely rival the first week collections of the previously released film The Kashmir Files which had collected Rs. 97.30 cr. Currently, Drishyam 2 remains high up on people’s priority list and is currently playing at all cinemas in town .
