Last week, actor Akshay Kumar released his latest cinematic venture Bellbottom at cinemas. With a large following throughout India – especially in Punjab where his films are most popular – this move was lauded by industry experts for its boldness and by other members of the public who were eagerly anticipating it with great anticipation. Yet despite all the noise surrounding this release, Punjabi film Puaada which opened 12 days ago flew under-the-radar without much publicity but has managed to do just as well even though there wasn’t much hype about it beforehand.
After collecting Rs. 50 lakhs on Day 1, the business of Puaada featuring Ammy Virk and Sonam Bajwa in lead roles continued to show exponential success, with a constant revenue stream pouring in over time. In fact, during its opening weekend it was successful enough to garner near to the Rs. 2.45 cr mark across India; an astounding accomplishment for any movie released at such short notice after postponing plans due to recent tragedies elsewhere in the country that rocked us all- including Ammy himself- back home. With these numbers rolling out, it would appear that if anything else can show us hope right now – other than our incredible volunteers who came together under one unifying message- then it would have been this film.
Following this up with a total of Rs. 3.83 crores over the course of its first week running theatres, Puaada only seems to be getting stronger from here on out!
