The Shahid Kapoor-starring movie Jersey had one of the worst openers ever on Monday after it saw a 45 to 50% drop from Friday to Sunday. The film was only able to bring in an estimated Rs 1.7 to 1.8 Crores during its 4th day which totalled out to a mere Rs 16.5 Crore over 4 days- making it an absolute disaster at the Box Office so far! There is little hope for this flick either; as studios will start pulling it soon and replace it with new releases such as Heropanti 2 and Runway 34 starting next week. All-in-all, if nothing changes very quickly, there may just be enough money left by then for Jersey’s lifetime Budget – which would make it about a 25 Crore hit!
The trend is dismissal which ranges from the lack of anticipation from the audience all throughout to just plain bad reviews. Multiple factors led to this and it could range from continuous delay of release dates all along or too many people having seen it on YouTube beforehand. Though critics liked it, the movie fell flat due to the lengthier than usual running time for a movie. One particular category altogether rejected it and abstained completely because they’d already watched Jersey in other formats such as being televised or released online.
This film marked Shahid Kapoor’s second high-profile disappointment after Kabir Singh’s huge success/high box office returns while barely breaking even at theaters – moving towards dismal numbers by its end of life cycle theatrically. It will be interesting to see what his upcoming projects look like now that he lacks both quality cinematic work but also A-list star power driving ticket sales.
