The critically acclaimed director Vivek Agnihotri’s latest film The Kashmir Files opened last weekend to excellent reviews and rave response. But the movie faced stiff competition from Akshay Kumar’s Bachchhan Paandey which was released on Wednesday. Despite this, The Kashmir Files scored big at theatres by maintaining its momentum even through fierce opposition.
At the end of its second week, it had a total collection of Rs 207 crore across India – beating out PK starring Amir Khan which had been running for six weeks and made Rs 100 crore less than The Kashmir Files (Rs 85 crore), other Shahrukh Khan movies such as Kalank (Rs 78 crore) and Raees (Rs 72 crore) which ran for five weeks before making their totals back home; as well as Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan that earned Rs 88 crores after four weeks in theatres nationwide.
Despite being preceded by a string of successful films like Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Rs. 143.25cr), Dangal (Rs. 115.96 cr), and Tiger Zinda Hai (Rs. 85.51 cr), the Anupam Kher led The Kashmir Files has been able to hold its ground against these big budget movies as well, managing to collect Rs 78 crore so far – higher than Kabir Singh (Rs 78 crores) or Tanhaai-The Unsung Warrior (Rs 78 crores). Though some reports claim that Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release, RRR, which released on January 25th will overtake both these movies at the box office; trade experts predict that though this might be true for an initial few weeks after the movie releases; but once again, it will come back down in time for The Kashmir Files to maintain a steady rate of success over long term collection rates too.
