It has been raining double centuries in the movie industry this year. The Kashmir Files scored a double century within two weeks, and then went on to continue standing tall one week later. Conversely, RRR (Hindi) did quite well in its first week and is now racing towards the Rs.200 crore mark – all within three weeks of release! This marks two consecutive doubles for Indian cinema which is remarkable given that an average film usually scores just one or none at all over the course of its release.
There was a buzz surrounding this movie when it first came out, but then every week when they set the date for release, something would happen that caused them to postpone. So when the movie finally came out last Friday night there weren’t very many people who thought it would do well. But by Tuesday morning everyone had gone crazy over how great it was! No one knew why because there wasn’t much promotion about it beforehand – all we saw were those tiny little trailers on TV and everything! And people just seem to keep coming back for more because now the box office gross is around Rs. 133 crores*.
On the contrary, The Kashmir Files is a once in a lifetime phenomenon that has taken place at the box office with a Rs. 15 crores budgeted film set to score over Rs. 250 crores just from the India release, with so much more coming from the overseas market as well. After an uninterrupted run for the first couple of weeks, it did start evidencing drops in the third week; especially during the weekdays, but then The Job was already done by that point.
This is why after three films, The Kashmir Files now stands at Rs. 238.28 crores and make no mistake about it – this is an all time blockbuster! With ‘Attack’ part 1 releasing today (Friday), let us only hope that this party continues with these 3 movies across genres which are drawing huge crowds.
