The Ranveer Singh starrer 83 released last week to a good response from the critics, but Kabir Khan’s directorial didn’t meet with a very welcoming reaction from most of the audience. Based on India’s iconic win at the 1983 World Cup, this film was expected to open big; but it faced stiff competition and sparse marketing which led to an average opening in its first few days. Overseas too where 83 also faced competition for eyeballs against Hollywood blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, it performed modestly well.
In today’s Box Office Report we will take a look at the opening week statistics for ’83,’ comparing it to some of Bollywood’s recent films that were successful abroad. Collecting approximately 3.5 million US dollars, ’83’ was able to surpass the film ‘Sooryavanshi’, which had only amassed about 3.3 million US dollars in its opening weekend earnings abroad – making it the current all-time top grosser among other films from India in international markets.
As of now, 83 continues to run in theatres. There were less than expected collections for the film’s opening weekend which will affect future earnings. Despite this, it is still expected to be one of the best-earning movies of the year based on projections.
