With no new releases this weekend and the Christmas holidays coming up, each of the three major films had an opportunity to do well. It was unfortunate that many theaters in Delhi were shut down due to a curfew imposed by the city government. All three movies had a lot going for them but it was unclear how they would stack up against one another since there were so few venues open for viewing.
83 opened up slowly and then despite having a decent rise on Saturday, the pattern didn’t change too drastically. Not only were the weekdays still selling between Rs.8-10 crores worth of tickets every day, but if they continued at this pace for just two more weeks, we could have expected some steady footfalls for the rest of its duration. But alas! The numbers never increased enough – because it just couldn’t surpass Rs. 71.87 crores collected so far which is less than what was needed to break 100 crores in revenue by now.
However, after it was delayed the Kabir Khan-directed 83 had one more week at the box office. Despite trade predictions painting a dim picture of its future, this additional time gave it just enough time to bring in a little bit more to its overall revenue numbers.
