Kabir Khan’s latest installment of the Bajrangi Bhaijaan series, starring Ranveer Singh, released earlier this year to both rave reviews and widespread hype. The business of this movie was expected to take off from Day One but the profits haven’t really lived up to expectations yet. After one week-the total earnings of 83 are just over Rs. 71 crores.
In this special report, we take a look at the business of the film while breaking it down based on revenue generated from its release in multiple languages. Expectedly, the Hindi version of the film has managed to pull in nearly half of all earnings with Rs. 68.1 crores coming in. This was followed by the Telugu dubbed release that made Rs. 1.96 crores, the Tamil version that made Rs. 0.82 crores, and finally both Kannada and Malayalam releases generating only 0.55 crores each for themselves over time – but nonetheless still significant considering these are relatively smaller markets for movies overseas.
While there was a general assumption that the Hindi dubbed version of this film would far outperform its regional counterparts, it is astonishing to see how the Telugu copy has managed to net Rs. 1.96 crores so far. With Shahid Kapoor’s new release Jersey postponed, 83 will continue to dominate and with one week left before the scheduled end date expect an increase in earnings for this diverse region too.
