Kabir Khan directed, Ranveer Singh starring 83, released on December 24th for the Christmas season just weeks before. With two years of anticipation and buildup due to its story portraying India’s 1983 World Cup win against West Indies, it was an eagerly awaited film.
The release had excited critics who praised it and predicted great success financially. Yet after only a week in theaters 83 is one of the lowest-grossing films ever made by an Indian director – less than $10 million domestically so far according to Business Insider – despite being a hit elsewhere including overseas where it grossed over $22 million – mostly from China (which accounted for nearly 80% of all global earnings).
