Well, we can’t say we’re not excited for the first big movie this year. Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali had opened recently, attracting tons of attention for its high viewership. It seems like people are pleased with it so far because according to recent reports- over 6 crore rupees have been made from ticket sales alone! Even more impressive is the fact that these numbers haven’t dropped even after a week! On Friday, about 10 million was made while on Thursday; 5 million rupees were earned which means that despite lower earnings on Sunday than Monday or Tuesday- ticket sales have remained consistent over the past few days.
It’s all about holding on for the next few weeks. The most immediate impact would be seen with the release of Robert Pattinson’s movie The Batman, which is a true blockbuster in theaters, and will take everyone’s attention away from lesser films. On the other hand, Amitabh Bachchan’s Jhund might not affect the film much right now, but it’ll have to compete against this new release over the weekend because reviews are strong enough to make it into an unlikely hit.
It will find a certain audience during weekdays; however it might take time until people start paying attention to Radhe Shyam. And then there is The Kashmir Files. Prabhas’ involvement ensures success at first; however people can’t just rely on his presence alone if they want this movie to gain traction later down the line.
Despite coming face-to-face with stiff competition week after week, Gangubai Kathiawadi managed to enter the Rs. 100 Crore Club. Though its journey past the Rs. 100 crores landmark wouldn’t be easy going forward – there are plenty of obstacles on its way – it did well enough in the first week alone to keep it safe and profitable for at least a little while longer. And who knows? We might even surpass our goal of making $100 billion soon enough…
