I’ve been writing about Hindi Cinema for twenty years and I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening right now. The unprecedented success of The Kashmir Files is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before – a pleasant dream which we don’t want to wake up from. It brings me joy to watch legends break records, create history. Never before have a film done so much in just the first two days- even if only by 10%.
And yet that seems to be the case with The Kashmir Files. After starting off at $3.5 million USD, it went on to earn $18 million USD on Tuesday alone! Is this all real? There’s nothing else left but amazement when faced with how audiences are lining up around the world – everywhere they can find a theater showing this movie! This just goes to show how exciting things are going to get in the coming weeks.
One of these films, starring Indian actor Anupam Kher, became the fastest movie to break through the Rs. 100 Crores threshold after beginning at just Rs. 3.55 crores in ticket sales. Currently sitting at an estimated Rs. 60 crore and assuming they bring in an average of Rs. 20 crore each day for the next two days while maintaining this level of success throughout weekdays, that means a total breaking through Rs. 100 crores can be expected within five days, making it one of the fastest movies to ever achieve such status.
