Irrfan Khan’s return to the big screen may have been met with a jolt of disappointment when his latest film, Angrezi Medium was released amid the recent rumors about coronavirus circulating nationwide and as per early estimates, collected Rs. 2.5 – 3 crores on its premiere day; it would’ve done much better had there not been cinema closures in Delhi markets or if audiences weren’t so wary of going to movie theatres given all the panic surrounding coronavirus at this point.
The reports from critics who saw the film are mixed but that also doesn’t stop audiences from flocking to watch it either; after all even though they didn’t give their opinion openly – they still showed up at cinemas giving an estimate of near NIL collection days after its release date according to Maharashtra Government orders for 24 hour theater shutdowns until Monday morning since those were announced earlier today.
Due to various reasons, it was unfortunate that Angrezi Medium saw its cinematic release. Unlike Baaghi 3 which experienced a mild downfall in its collection numbers due to lockdown of theatres in Delhi, this film also resulted in a huge slump for Tiger Shroff and his production house. With most Indian territories shutting down its cinemas from Saturday onwards – hence restricting any form of profit opportunity; both the producers lost out on nearly 50% profit margin leading to reports pointing towards concluding collections under the 100 crores mark when compared with initial projections that had pegged TSS at 150 crores- while the overall number is expected to plummet further thanks to Bombay’s total shutdown by next weekend alongside Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh – states that account for more than half of India’s business potential. It only confirms one thing – just like how other industries are shaken up by this incident, Bollywood has suffered too despite taking preventive measures well before necessary.
