कर्ण का जन्म
कर्ण के जन्म के विषय में कहा जाता है यह कुंती के कुँआरी अवस्था में पैदा हुए थे | कुंती की सेवा से प्रसन्न दुर्वासा ऋषि ने उन्हें एक मंत्र दिया था जिससे वे किसी का आह्वान करके पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति कर सकती थी | उत्सुकता वश और मन्त्र की सत्यता जांच करने के लिए कुंती ने सूर्य देव का आह्वान किया और जिसके फल स्वरुप कर्ण कुंती के गर्भ में आ गया | फिर कुंती की कुँआरी अवस्था में ही कर्ण कुण्डल और कवच के साथ पैदा हुआ |
कुंती ने समाज के भय के कारण कर्ण को एक टोकरी में रखकर नदी में बहा दिया | वह टोकरी सूत अधिरथ और उनकी पत्नी राधा को मिली और उन्होंने उसे अपना बेटा मान कर उसका लालन-पालन किया | इसी वजह से कर्ण को सूत पुत्र तथा राधे कहा जाता है|

कर्ण की शिक्षा
कर्ण को शस्त्र विद्या की शिक्षा गुरु द्रोणाचार्य ने दी थी किन्तु कर्ण की उत्पत्ति के विषय में उन्हें संदेह होने की वजह से उन्होंने उसे ब्रह्मास्त्र का प्रयोग करना नहीं सिखाया | तब कर्ण परशुराम के पास गए और अपने को ब्राह्मण बताकर शस्त्र विद्या सीखने लगे | एक दिन किसी वजह से परशुराम को यह ज्ञात हो गया कि कर्ण ब्राह्मण नहीं है फिर परशुराम ने कर्ण को एक श्राप दिया कि जिस समय तुम्हें इस विद्या की सबसे ज्यादा आवश्यकता होगी उस समय तुम इस विद्या को भूल जाओगे|

कर्ण को श्राप
कर्ण को जीवन में दो श्राप मिले थे
पहला श्राप इस प्रकार है कि एक समय कि बात है परशुराम कर्ण कि जंघा पर सर रखकर आराम कर रहे थे तभी थोड़े समय के बाद वहां एक बिच्छू आता है फिर कर्ण सोचता है कि अगर मैं बिच्छू को हटाने की कोशिश करता हूँ तो गुरु की नींद भंग हो जाएगी | वह उनकी नींद भंग नहीं करने देना चाहता था फिर उसने बिच्छू को हटाने के वजाये बिच्छू को डांक मारने दिया और वह बिच्छू के डांक मारने का दर्द सहता रहा |
फिर जब गुरु परशुराम की नींद खुलती है और वे जब यह सब देखते हैं तो फिर उन्हें बहुत क्रोध आता है और वे कहते हैं कि इतनी सहनशीलता केवल एक क्षत्रिये में हो सकती हैं और तुम झूठ बोल कर मुझसे ये सब सीख रहे थे इसलिए मैं तुम्हे श्राप देता हूँ कि जब तुम्हे मेरे द्वारा सिखाई गयी विद्या की सबसे ज्यादा जरुरत होगी तो तुम उस समय ये विद्या भूल जाओगे |
इतना सब हो जाने के बाद कर्ण गुरु परशुराम को समझाता है की वह खुद नहीं जनता कि वह किस वंश का है तब परशुराम को पछतावा होता है लेकिन दिया गया श्राप वापस नहीं लिया जा सकता तो फिर परशुराम अपना धनुष कर्ण को दे देते हैं |
फिर कुछ वर्षों के बाद कर्ण गलती से एक ब्राह्मण की गाय को मार देते हैं फिर उस ब्राह्मण ने कर्ण को श्राप दिया था कि जिसे तुम मारना चाहते हो तुम उसी के हाथों मारे जाओगे| इस प्रकार कर्ण को दो श्राप मिले थे |

कर्ण की दुर्योधन से मित्रता
कर्ण शुरुआत से ही अर्जुन के प्रतिद्वंदी थे जिसकी वजह से उसकी दुर्योधन से मित्रता हो गई थी |

कर्ण का विवाह
एक बार द्रौपदी के स्वयंवर के लिए राजा गण राजा द्रुपद के यहां एकत्र हुए थे | द्रौपदी के स्वयंवर में एक प्रतियोगिता राखी गयी थी जिसके अनुसार जो भी राजा धनुष उठाकर मछली के प्रतिबिम्ब को देख कर मछली की आँख में निशाना लगाएगा द्रौपदी का विवाह उसी से होगा | उस सभा में किसी ने भी उस धनुष को हिला तक नहीं पाया | लेकिन अर्जुन से पूर्व कर्ण ने उस धनुष को उठा लिया था पर द्रौपदी ने सूतपुत्र होने की वजह से उनसे विवाह करने से मना कर दिया था | इसकी वजह से कर्ण ने विशेष रूप से अपने आपको काफी अपमानित समझा | कर्ण का विवाह पद्मावती नाम की कन्या से हुआ था|

कर्ण का दानवीर स्वभाव
कर्ण ने पांचों पांडवों का वध करने का संकल्प लिया था पर माता कुंती के कहने पर उन्होंने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा अर्जुन तक ही सीमित कर दी थी | कर्ण को दानवीर भी कहा जाता है उनकी दानवीर होने के काफी किस्से हैं | कर्ण के इस दानवीर स्वभाव को देखकर इंद्र उनके पास उनका कवच और कुंडल मांगने गए थे फिर कर्ण ने उन्हें कवच और कुंडल दे दिए थे |
फिर इंद्र ने उन्हें एक बार प्रयोग करने के लिए अपनी एक अमोघ शक्ति दे दी थी | इससे किसी का भी वध किया जा सकता था | कर्ण उस शक्ति का प्रयोग अर्जुन पर करना चाहते थे किन्तु दुर्योधन के कहने पर उन्होंने उस शक्ति का प्रयोग भीम के पुत्र घटोत्कच पर किया था |
महाभारत युद्ध से पहले भगवान् कृष्ण कर्ण के पास जाते हैं और उसे उसके जन्म की सच्चाई बताते हैं और कर्ण को समझाते हैं कि उसे पांडवों यानी कि अपने भाइयों की तरफ से युद्ध लड़ना चाहिए | लेकिन कर्ण ने इसका प्रतिरोध करके अपनी सत्य निष्ठा और अपनी सच्ची मित्रता का परिचय दिया |

कर्ण का कुंती को वचन
युद्ध होने से पहले कुंती का मन व्याकुल हो उठा, वे नहीं चाहती थी कि कर्ण कौरवों की तरफ से युद्ध लड़ें और कर्ण का पांडवों के साथ युद्ध हो | इसलिए वे कर्ण को समझाने के लिए कर्ण के पास गई जब कुंती कर्ण के पास गई तो कर्ण उनके सम्मान में खड़े हो गए और उनसे कहा कि आप यहां पहली बार आयी हैं तो इस राधे का सम्मान स्वीकार करें | फिर कुंती ने कर्ण से कहा कि तुम राधे नहीं हो मैं तुम्हारी मां हूं लोक लाज और समाज के भय के कारण मैंने तुम्हें त्याग दिया था |
तुम पांडवों के बड़े भाई हो इसलिए तुम्हें कौरवों के साथ नहीं बल्कि अपने भाई पांडवों के साथ रहना चाहिए | मैं नहीं चाहती कि भाइयों में परस्पर युद्ध हो | मैं चाहती हूं कि तुम पांडवों के पक्ष में रहो और बड़े भाई होने के नाते राज्य के अधिकारी हो | फिर कुंती ने कहा कि मैं चाहती हूं कि तुम युद्ध जीत कर राजा बनो | तब कर्ण ने कहा माता आपने मुझे त्यागा था, क्षत्रियों के कुल में पैदा होने के बाद भी मैं सूत पुत्र कहलाता हूं | सूत पुत्र कहलाने के कारण द्रोणाचार्य ने मेरा गुरु बनना स्वीकार नहीं किया तथा दुर्योधन ही मेरे सच्चे मित्र हैं | मैं उनका उपकार और मित्रता नहीं भूल सकता किंतु आपका मेरे पास आना व्यर्थ नहीं जाएगा क्योंकि आज तक मेरे पास आया हुआ कोई भी इंसान खाली हाथ नहीं गया है |
मैं आपको वचन देता हूं कि मैं अर्जुन के सिवाय आपके किसी भी पुत्र पर अस्त्र-शस्त्र का प्रयोग नहीं करूंगा | मेरा और अर्जुन का युद्ध तो होना ही है और हम दोनों में से किसी एक की मृत्यु निश्चित है | मेरी प्रतिज्ञा है कि आप पांच पुत्रों की ही माता बनी रहेंगी |

कर्ण की मृत्यु
फिर महाभारत के युद्ध में गुरु द्रोणाचार्य के मारे जाने के बाद युद्ध के 16वे दिन कर्ण को कौरवों की सेना का सेनापति बनाया गया | अर्जुन को छोड़ कर उसने अन्य पांडवों को जीता किंतु कुंती के अनुरोध की वजह से उसने किसी का भी वध नहीं किया | युद्ध के 17वे दिन कर्ण के रथ का पहिया जमीन में धस जाता है फिर कर्ण अपना धनुष रखकर रथ के पहिये को निकालने लगता है | उसी समय भगवान कृष्ण अर्जुन से कर्ण का वध करने को कहते हैं | फिर अर्जुन कर्ण का वध कर देते हैं इस तरह एक महान धनुर्धर , दानवीर योद्धा की मृत्यु हो जाती है |

Birth of Karna
It is said about the birth of Karna that he was born in the virgin state of Kunti. Durvasa Rishi, pleased with the service of Kunti, had given her a mantra by which she could get a son by invoking someone. To overcome her curiosity and check the veracity of the mantra, Kunti invoked the Sun God.
And as a result of which Karna came into the womb of Kunti. Then Karna was born with Kundal and Kavach in Kunti’s virgin state.
Due to the fear of the society, Kunti put Karna in a basket and drowned him in the river. That basket yarn was found by Adhirath and his wife Radha and they brought him up as their own son. For this reason, Karna is called Sutputra and Radhe.

Karna’s education
Karna was taught the art of weapons by Guru Dronacharya, but he did not teach him to use the Brahmastra because he had doubts about Karna’s origin. Then Karna went to Parshuram and started learning weapons by calling himself a Brahmin. One day for some reason Parshuram came to know that Karna is not a Brahmin, then Parshuram gave a curse to Karna that at the time when you need this knowledge the most, at that time you will forget this knowledge.

Karna got two curses in his life
The first curse is as follows that once upon a time Parshuram was resting with his head on Karna’s thigh, then after some time a scorpion comes there, then Karna thinks that if I try to remove the scorpion, then Guru’s sleep will dissolve He did not want to disturb their sleep, then instead of removing the scorpion, he allowed the scorpion to sting and he continued to suffer the pain of the scorpion’s sting.
Then when Guru Parshuram wakes up and when he sees all this, then he gets very angry and he says that only a Kshatriya can have so much tolerance and you were learning all this from me by lying, so I tell you I curse that when you need the knowledge taught by me the most, you will forget this knowledge at that time.
After all this, Karna explains to Guru Parshuram that he himself does not know which dynasty he belongs to, then Parshuram feels remorse but the curse given cannot be taken back, then Parshuram gives his bow to Karna.
Then after a few years, Karna accidentally kills a Brahmin’s cow. Then that Brahmin cursed Karna that you will be killed by the one whom you want to kill. Thus Karna got two curses.

Karna was Arjuna’s rival since the beginning, due to which he became friends with Duryodhana.

Karna’s marriage
Once, for Draupadi’s Swayamvara, the kings had gathered at King Drupada’s place. A competition was held in Draupadi’s Swayamvar, according to which the king who would pick up the bow and aim at the fish’s eye by looking at the reflection of the fish, Draupadi would be married to him. No one in that assembly could even move that bow. But before Arjuna, Karna had lifted that bow, but Draupadi had refused to marry him because of being the son of a cotton thread. Because of this, Karna especially considered himself very humiliated. Karna was married to a girl named Padmavati.

Karna’s charitable nature
Karna had vowed to kill the five Pandavas, but at the behest of Mother Kunti, he limited his vow to Arjuna only. Karna is also called Danveer, there are many stories of his being a Danveer. Seeing this heroic nature of Karna, Indra went to him to ask for his armor and coil, then Karna gave him the armor and coil.
Then Indra gave him one of his unfailing power to use once. Anyone could be killed by this. Karna wanted to use that power on Arjuna, but at the behest of Duryodhana, he used that power on Ghatotkacha, the son of Bhima.
Lord Krishna goes to Karna before the Mahabharata war and tells him the truth of his birth and explains to Karna that he should fight the war on the side of Pandavas i.e. his brothers. But by resisting this, Karna showed his true loyalty and his true friendship.

Karna’s promise to Kunti
Kunti’s mind was distraught before the war, she did not want Karna to fight the war on behalf of the Kauravas and Karna to have a war with the Pandavas. So she went to Karna to convince Karna. When Kunti went to Karna, Karna stood up in her honor and told her that you have come here for the first time, so accept the respect of this Radhe. Then Kunti told Karna that you are not Radhe, I am your mother, I had abandoned you because of public shame and fear of society.
You are the elder brother of the Pandavas, so you should not live with the Kauravas but with your brothers, the Pandavas. I don’t want brothers to fight with each other. I want you to be on the side of the Pandavas and be the elder brother of the kingdom. Then Kunti said that I want you to win the war and become the king. Then Karna said, Mother, you had abandoned me, even after being born in the clan of Kshatriyas, I am called the son of Suta. Dronacharya did not accept to be my teacher because of being called the son of a thread and Duryodhana is my true friend. I cannot forget their kindness and friendship, but your coming to me will not go in vain because no person who has come to me has gone away empty handed.
I promise you that I will not use weapons on any of your sons except Arjuna. The war between me and Arjuna is bound to happen and the death of either of us is certain. I promise that you will remain the mother of only five sons.

Karna’s death
Then after Guru Dronacharya was killed in the war of Mahabharata, Karna was made the commander of the Kaurava army on the 16th day of the war. Except Arjuna, he won other Pandavas but because of Kunti’s request, he did not kill anyone. Karna’s chariot wheel sinks into the ground on the 17th day of the war Then Karna keeps his bow and starts removing the wheel of the chariot. At the same time Lord Krishna asks Arjuna to kill Karna. Then Arjuna kills Karna, thus a great archer, a heroic warrior dies.
