Post Valentine’s Day effect came into play on Saturday as the collection numbers for Love Aaj Kal rose to Rs. 8.01 crores. The Imtiaz Ali directed film had managed a reasonable number of Rs. 12.40 crores on its release and it was always probable that the collection numbers would decrease on Saturday. Still, there were higher hopes set for between Rs 10 – 12 crore turnover during this time frame instead of the low end of what ended up being received at Rs 8 crore or less (Rs 9 crore). With positive reviews seeming to be split in terms of opinion, it will now come down to whether or not Sunday sustains at this level or begins to rise once again towards achieving higher goals such as collecting around Rs 30 crores before all is said and done over the course of an entire weekend run (ending date – Feb 16th)
The good thing about this film is that it has already broken even through selling other rights. It was made for Rs. 57 crores, but only had a production budget of Rs. 42 crores and marketing budget of Rs. 15 crores; so there was no need to worry about expenses from the get-go. Since then, revenue from domestic and international sources have been additional bonuses. For Malang – which remained just about level throughout its release weekend – it picked up pace Friday morning when it took in another Rs. 2 crore bringing the total thus far to Rs. 44 crore+. If Mohit Suri’s latest directorial managed a bit of an uptick today or reached closer to the three crore mark, then all the better!
Meanwhile, Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior stays on to be in the bigger scheme of things as collections have finally touched the Rs. 1 crore* mark all over again. This is truly unbelievable because it has been thirty-seven days since release and there are still many who haven’t seen this Ajay Devgn film yet. Currently standing at about Rs. 271 crores*, which only seems like a matter of time until this billion dollar film does reach near to Rs. 273 crores*.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited.
