Despite a lackluster first day of earnings, Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak saw an increase in profits on its second day as preliminary estimates suggest it made about Rs. 6.25 to 6.75 crore for the weekend which would bring its overall net worth to roughly 11-11.5 crores since it debuted primarily at high-end theaters over the weekend.
While some say that the below par performance of Chhapaak was due to Deepika visiting JNU for a political stance, this is not true since people have been unimpressed by the lacklustre content and because the competitor, Tanhaaji- The Unsung Warrior took away a group of audience members who might have wanted to see Chhapaak had they saw it alone. However, collections are best in Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Kolkata but seem dull everywhere else across the country. If a film like Chhappaak arrived alone without Ajay Devgn’s period saga overpowering it then audiences would’ve been happier; especially considering Mumbai City where there was no support at all.
Reports show that there will be limited growth in collections on Sunday and the film is looking to close its weekend a little under the Rs. 20 crore mark, which doesn’t seem too remarkable at all. We can even expect a flat trend on Sunday considering yesterday’s results were subpar. The second day collections should have been the opening day for the film because then it would have set a platform for increasing sales over the weeked. The target of Chhapaak was Rs. 30 crores but instead they fell short by ten crores when comparing today’s numbers with yesterday’s (Rs 18+12). It’ll be interesting to see what happens next week once Monday arrives but right now deepika padukone fans might want to start getting worried about her career.
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, also starring Vikrant Massey, Chhapaak tells the story of three individuals from Mumbai who are drawn together by life-changing circumstances.
