Last Friday saw the release of the highly anticipated Ayushmann Khurrana–led movie Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, a film tackling the sensitive yet taboo issue of same–sex love in numerous Indian cities. Critics responded with mixed reviews; however, the public embraced the film wholeheartedly and the business of the film got off to a good start.
In this analysis of the box office performance, we take a closer look at the opening weekend collections of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, comparing the figures to the previous releases of 2020. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan managed to make Rs. 32.66 cr, outdoing the debut collection of Love Aaj Kal (starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan), which had opened with Rs. 26 cr. Even though earlier releases such as Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior (collecting Rs. 61.75 cr) and Street Dancer 3D (collecting Rs. 39 cr) stand as the top two highest opening weekend grossers of 2020, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan managed to outperform other movies released in 2020 such as Malang (which made Rs. 25.36 cr), Chhapaak (which made Rs. 19.02 cr), Bhoot: Part 1 – The Haunted Ship (which made Rs. 16.36 cr), Panga (which made Rs. 14.91 cr) and Jawaani Jaaneman (which made Rs. 12.83 cr).
Despite the fact that Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan recorded a profitable opening weekend, it still needs to pass the test of the Monday. Furthermore, trade experts forecast that, considering the movie covers a subject which is still socially unacceptable in many Indian villages and cities, the revenue generated by the film will suffer a downturn.
