Starring Ranveer Singh, 83 released at the end of last year on December 24th domestically in Indian theatres alone. Internationally, however, the film opened three days earlier – on December 23rd – taking 1512 screens across 80 different countries worldwide, collecting $1.57 million USD [Rs. 11.8 crores] on its opening day (Day 1).
This number surpassed expectations and was even able to collect more money than blockbuster Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi (a total of $1.08 million USD) despite being released internationally two days later and having one less screen available for viewing because Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home also debuted this weekend with an astonishing 3376 total screens across 168 countries around the world; including India where most screenings were sold out already.
Meanwhile, despite the fact that the movie was given little to no media attention beforehand due to its focus on football (soccer), it has made an impressive opening day performance in many major markets across the globe. For example, 83 currently ranks number 2 at the Australian Box Offices this past weekend with only Spiderman: Far From Home ahead of it in terms of gross earnings. It also ranks first place in Luxembourg where last years blockbuster release The Matrix Revolutions came nowhere near its performance levels from last year.
