Last Friday, the much–awaited Ranbir Kapoor starrer, Shamshera, hit the screens with its director Karan Malhotra and Yash Raj Films at the helm of production. Unfortunately, despite the large scale production and marketing, the movie was not well–received at the box office and its first–day collections of Rs. 10.25 cr. merely added to the dismal reception. As if following suit, on the second day too, the movie registered a mere increase of Rs. 10.50 cr. in collections, only to find similar fate on its third day, with Rs. 11 cr. pouring in. To this extent, Shamshera has become Yash Raj Films’ fourth consecutive flop in a row at the box office.
Following previous releases like Bunty Aur Babli 2 which collected Rs. 12.50 cr, Jayeshbhai Jordaar which collected Rs. 15.59 cr, and Samrat Prithviraj which had collected Rs. 68.05 cr, the Ranbir Kapoor starrer Shamshera has faced a similar fate with Rs. 31.75 cr. coming in over its opening weekend.
Commenting on the disappointing box office performance of Shamshera, trade analyst Taran Adarsh remarked that the results have sent shock waves through the industry. “The box office performance has not even remotely matched up to the initial expectations for the movie. Everyone expected it to have an explosive opening, but the numbers have been a massive surprise. It is fair to say that people and the industry are utterly bewildered by what has transpired, particularly when taking into account the sheer scale and expansive promotional campaign the film had. Had things gone as expected, the opening weekend numbers for Shamshera should have easily crossed the Rs. 50 cr. mark, yet it only brought in Rs. 31.75 cr. which is an astonishing shock to all of us.“, concluded Adarsh.
Looking ahead, it appears that Shamshera’s business is unlikely to see any substantial improvement due to the overall unpopularity of the film amongst the viewers. While it may remain on the big screen for some time, trade reports suggest only a minor increase in profits.
