Last Thursday, 11th August saw the release of two major films: Aamir Khan – Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar – Bhumi Pednekar’s Raksha Bandhan. The industry expected a promising business due to both holidays in celebration – Rakshabandhan and India’s Independence Day. However, much to everyone’s surprise, the response at the box office has been tepid. The figures have only diminished steadily ever since their underwhelming opening day collections.
It comes as no surprise that Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandha have seen the biggest box office disappointment of the year, proving to be lower grossers compared to previous releases such as Mohenjo Daro and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara. On day four of its release, Laal Singh Chadda saw a staggering 21% decline in earnings from the previous day’s collections, with Raksha Bandhan recording around 10%. Traditionally, film viewership usually sees an increase during holidays like Independence Day; however, this does not appear to be the case this year.
At present, both the movies Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan are still playing in theatres, however the industry insiders believe that their run is about to come to an end. As per initial projections, Laal Singh Chaddha which has earned a total of Rs. 45.83 crore, is likely to accumulate a sum of around Rs. 70 crore by the time of its closure. Likewise, Raksha Bandhan, with a collection of Rs. 34.47 crore, is predicted to accumulate nearly Rs. 50 crore as the total income from its theatrical run.
