It was an excellent Saturday for the trio of releases in theaters – Thappad, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Bhoot Part One – The Haunted Ship – as they experienced good progress when compared to the previous day. It can also be said that none of these three releases were doing spectacularly well, resulting in the viewers being evenly distributed across the screens. This led to a beneficial effect on the box office numbers.
We shall start our discussion by focusing on Thappad. On Saturday, the movie earned a total of Rs. 5.05 crores, despite receiving a great amount of recognition from the media and support from viewers. This figure could have been better if given the response, however, the numbers show a steady growth from the previous day’s income of Rs. 3.07 crores, signaling a decent weekend for the Anubhav Sinha–directed flick. Till now, Thappad has collected a total of Rs. 8.12 crores.
On Saturday, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan jumped from Rs. 2.08 crores to Rs. 3.25 crores. Although the film had made a good start on its first Friday, it was unable to sustain the same level of success beyond the opening weekend. Despite this, it has managed to attract a certain degree of viewership, thus enabling it to make a total of Rs. 50.17 crores. In addition, today, it is expected to surpass the Rs. 54 crores mark and should be able to reach the Rs. 60 crores milestone by the end of the third weekend.
Bhoot Part One – The Haunted Ship is likely to cross the Rs. 30 crore mark before the close of its second week. The current total of this Bhanu Pratap Singh-directed movie is Rs. 26.95 crores*, and it has shown a positive shift in numbers, with Friday (Rs. 1.02 crores) and Saturday (Rs. 1.75 crores*) numbers growing substantially. Furthermore, it is anticipated to breach the Rs. 2 crore barrier today, after which it will merely be a matter of time before the Karan Johar production crosses the Rs. 30 crore milestone.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited.
