Thappad made a respectable debut at the box office, collecting Rs. 3.07 crores on its opening day. Despite expectations being somewhat lower than the predictions of this column – roughly Rs. 4 crores – the film’s performance failed to generate the level of buzz that was expected. In other words, the movie made a start as predicted but its evening and night showings could have been much better.
Despite this, the movie has received favorable reviews which should encourage the city’s multiplex crowd to show up in big numbers today. This will ensure word–of–mouth has a good start and if the reviews turn out to be accurate, then Sunday will show further growth.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan stayed steady with a collection of Rs. 2.08 crores. The decline was steep from Monday to Wednesday, leading to the expectation of an even steeper drop on its second Friday. Fortunately, since there was no significant competition from any other movie, it enabled Ayushmann Khurranna’s starrer to witness an acceptable performance at the box office.
Up until now, the movie has earned Rs. 46.92 crores and with a bit of a push, it has a very good chance of attaining the 50 crores milestone today.
