The Allu Arjun starrer Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1 has managed to make it through India’s Monsoon period and emerge as one of the top ten highest grossing films this year, despite other great Bollywood movies released around the same time. With approximately 22.5 crores made in opening weekend, this action drama movie is looking more promising than last year’s Baahubali movies for sure. Critics were quite surprised about how quickly this film became a blockbuster when many did not even know about it beforehand!
As per Aamir Khan’s formula, To measure a film’s success, you need to see the weekend figures and compare it with the total collection. Like 3 Idiots did Rs. 40 crores on the weekend and the total business was Rs. 202 crores, so the weekend multiplied by 5 is its behaviour which is very good. That shows people have gone again and again to see that film.
In my report for comparisons, I introduce a new metric: the Weekend to Lifetime Multiple. Based on this information, it is clear that movies with higher multiplies have stronger content and are more likely to stay at theaters longer – proving their success from week-to-week. As you can see from my numbers below, Pushpa – The Rise garners an average Weekend to Lifetime Multiplier of 7.04 which beats other competitive productions like Urî – The Surgical Strike (6.87), Queen (6.10), Hindi Medium (5.54) and Baahubali – The Beginning (5.31). Some other noteworthy titles included in my list are 3 Idiots, Tanhaji -The Unsung Warrior, Housefull 4, Bajirao Mastani, Kabir Singh, Dangal , PK, Simmba ,Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
