After much hype and buzz, the Rohit Shetty directed Sooryavanshi finally sees its release. It stars actors Ashay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles alongside Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn who make special appearances. With heightened expectations due to it being one of the first big ticket blockbusters from Bollywood since theatres reopened after a ban was put in place, there are high hopes for this film.
Business prospects for movies in India seem to depend heavily on how they are released throughout different regions. These differences reflect various income levels, laws, and lifestyles within these areas but also provide insight into what people are more interested in watching. For example, Sooryavanshi opened to $26 million–marking it one of the top films so far this year; compared with last year’s only blockbuster – Maharaja starring Ajay Devgan – which made $1 million less than what was predicted.
Yet even with restrictions such as show times restricted to six hours per day for citizens of certain cities – numbers for films continue to trend upward at pace much higher than last year; being attributed mainly to demand from rural viewers where productions often start playing several days after a release or stay running due to strong demand from audiences there combined with lighter regulations.
