Plastic waste is a growing problem plaguing communities around the world. Landfills are overburdened with non-biodegradable plastics, and discarded plastics are polluting oceans and waterways. However, innovative recycling companies are proving that this plastic waste can be viewed as an opportunity rather than a liability. With the right equipment like plastic granulators, plastic scrap can be processed into reusable materials or converted into salable products that generate profits, while also reducing plastic pollution in the local environment.

How Granulators Convert Plastic Waste into Usable Materials

Plastic granulators are powerful shredding machines that grind unsorted, bulky plastic objects into uniform plastic flakes or powders. The sharp rotary blades inside the granulator shear the plastic at high speeds, producing consistently sized particles. The particle size can be customized based on the spacing of the cutting blades and the perforated screens.

These ground plastics are more easily sorted, cleaned, and processed compared to whole plastic items. The granulation step transforms scrap plastic into a valuable commodity. The plastic chips or powders can then be further separated by type, color, and properties using water flotation tanks, air separators, shakers, and other specialized equipment.

Once sorted into purified streams, the recycled plastic flakes are ready to be remanufactured into new products, creating a closed-loop recycling system. The tiny plastic particles melt faster and more consistently compared to solid plastic. This allows the plastic granules to be reused in plastic molding machines or extruders to make recycled goods.

potential End Products Made from Recycled PlasticParticles

The recycled plastic chips produced by granulators can be turned into many profitable products including:

    • Plastic lumber – Used for decking, fencing, landscaping, and construction
    • Garden supplies – Plastic lumber is made into raised garden beds, compost bins, and flowerpots
    • Composite ties – Mixed with wood fiber to create sustainable composite railroad ties
    • Packaging – Converted into clamshells, trays, containers for foods and retail goods
    • Pipes – Manufactured into PVC and HDPE pipes and fittings
    • Pet products – Chew toys, custom beds, and accessories for dogs and cats
    • Outdoor furniture – Picnic tables, benches, Adirondack chairs made with recycled plastic
    • Playground equipment – Plastic lumber is used to make slides, climbing structures, etc.
    • Street furniture – Signs, bollards, bus shelters, and park benches contain recycled plastic
    • Fabrics – Plastic bottles made into polyester fibers for clothing, bags, accessories
    • Filament for 3D printing – Granulated plastics like ABS and PLA can be re-extruded into printing filament

The wide range of products that can be profitably produced from recycled plastics is expanding constantly thanks to advances in plastic processing technology and equipment. Granulators make this closed-loop economy possible.

    Benefits for the Local Environment

In addition to generating revenue, recycling facilities that utilize plastic granulators create meaningful benefits for the local community and ecosystem including:

    • Diverting plastic waste from landfills and incinerators
    • Reducing plastic pollution in neighborhoods, parks, beaches and waterways
    • Lowering plastic disposal costs for municipalities and waste management
    • Cutting greenhouse gas emissions compared to manufacturing virgin plastic
    • Conserving petroleum resources used in plastic production
    • Limiting expansion of landfills and need for new dump sites
    • Creating local jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries
    • Improving public perception of plastics as a sustainable option
    • Educating communities about environmental solutions and benefits

With their ability to transform plastic waste into usable feedstocks for profit, plastic granulators are powerful tools for building circular economies while also enhancing sustainability locally. Their adoption is critical for companies, cities, and countries seeking to reduce plastic pollution through innovative recycling solutions. The positive financial and environmental impacts will only continue to grow as more plastic scrap is diverted from disposal into these closed-loop recycling systems centered around granulators.
