On Thursday, the much anticipated Telugu movie starring Vijay Deverakonda, Liger was released to audiences. Although it made a grand opening with approximately Rs. 17 crores gross collection (+2 crore from Hindi paid previews), reviews were disappointing as its South Indian market has seen one of the most drastic collapses ever witnessed. Our tracking showed that on the second day, it brought in between Rs. 4.10 to 4.40 crores making its total earnings around Rs. 21 crore and beyond.
The movie’s box office intake within two days in the Telugu regions amounts to Rs. 11 crore, and it is projected to reach an opening weekend revenue of up to Rs. 16 crore. What should be noted is that the distributors acquired the sports-action genre flick for a cost of Rs. 55 crore, hence implying that a loss in earnings amounting to no less than Rs. 35 crores will take place across Telugu states alone. If we factor in worldwide prospects, then losses for the distributors would exceed Rs. 50 crores as a whole.
After a triple disappointment in the Telugu film industry with Dear Comrade and World Famous Lover, the actor hopes Khushi, starring alongside Samantha, will be his saving grace. Sadly, its prospects in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka are dim; it’s expected to leave most cinema halls in Telugu states by Monday.
On Friday, Liger saw the biggest fall in its ticket sales yet, as the South Indian states reported a staggering 77 percent drop compared to their collections from opening day.
