Vijay Deverakonda’s movie ‘Liger’ witnessed another significant decline in collections on Saturday at the South Indian box office. After its initial collection of Rs. 17 crores, the film took a hit of more than 75% and collected only Rs. 4.25 crores on Friday and has now declined by 30% further with estimates suggesting its third–day earning to be around Rs. 3.25 crores taking the gross total of Liger in South India to Rs 24.50 crores. The South Indian rights were sold for a sum of Rs 70 crore, out of which 60 crore was taken up by Telugu states alone.
After three days, Liger’s collection is around Rs. 13 crores; hence, there is still an outstanding debt of Rs. 57 crores. When the Southern region tally reaches its final total at Rs. 17 crores, the whole area would experience a deficit of Rs. 53 crores. Its time at the box office is coming to an end, so all that remains for us to do now is wait for Monday when the proceeds will be practically non–existent.
On the whole, people have a negative outlook; however, despite that, the Hindi film industry has managed to maintain its balance on the weekend. But, there’s no doubt it will also experience a nosedive come Monday. Taking into account Liger’s total losses including those in foreign countries, distributors face potential damages amounting to Rs 65 crores considering their acquisition of world rights at Rs 90 crore.
As Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger sets to become the biggest disaster of his career, and the worst Telugu film of 2022 after Chiranjeevi’s Acharya, we wait with bated breath to see if this year has any other unexpected hits or misses in store.
