Now this is an unexpected turn of events indeed! Three movies released last Friday – Doctor G, Code Name Tiranga, and Kantara (Hindi). The first two are Bollywood productions whereas the third is a dub for a Kannada movie. Doctor G was an Ayushmann Khurana film which has been made at a lower cost while Code Name Tiranga had an upper-tier budget allotted to it and also stars an actress in its lead role. Kantara meanwhile is purely regional production with no hope of catching international attention.
Still, it’s clear that Kantara will end up being the movie people love the most. And then there’s Code Name Tiranga – though this one doesn’t seem to matter all that much at all. Doctor G on the other hand was quickly overshadowed by both of these two movies; so much so that even after weekdays its weekday collections couldn’t hold a candle to what those of Kantara and Code Name Tiranga are doing. In fact, by Friday night it seemed like only another few days before the difference between these three would be nothing but negligible numbers on paper; certainly no game-changer either way in terms of overall collections.
So far, Doctor G collected Rs. 20.5 crores at the box office and this is very low for an opening weekend for a film with such potential. The trend indicates that best case scenario – it could reach up to Rs. 26-28 crores lifetime earnings, which are still pretty terrible compared to films of old or films releasing now. On the other hand, Kantara (Hindi) has its eye on collecting Rs. 30 crore lifetime earnings because people have been enthusiastic about the movie from all over India .The film opened nearly 30% higher than what Doctor G did during the first few days but by the end of the week; came close to catching up and overtaking it by about 75%. So far, Kantara collected Rs. 15 crores and will continue growing throughout next week as well making more money in one way or another than Doctor G did.
As for the movie Code Name Tiranga, it has proved itself to be a total failure within the first week – grossing less than one crore rupees. Disappointing.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
