Last week on Friday, we saw the release of Dr. G., starring Ayushmann Khurana. Like his previous films, it also had a unique and unusual story-line – about a male gynecologist who has many interpersonal struggles but manages to overcome them all eventually. With significantly less promotion than most movies receive and considerably lower fan-hype due to this fact, people were curious whether or not Dr. G would do well financially… according to sources it did start out slow for its first few days at the box office but then managed to pick up throughout the weekend; earning it an ‘A’ rating from censors who usually don’t give that rating very often anyway!
In our latest box office reports, we explore what may be the lowest opening for Dr. G and how it compares to his past performances. While even collecting Rs. 15.03 crore Dr. G has emerged as the actors sixth highest grossing movies during its opening weekend, surpassing Ayushmann’s previous films like AndhaDhun which collected RS. 15 crores or Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui which collected Rs.14.53 crores or Shub Mangal Saavdhan that had collected Rs.14.46 crores; his business doesn’t seem competitive when compared to some of his past successes such as Badhaai Ho which earned RS 46 crores or Dream Girl with RS 44-57 crores or Bala with RS 43-95 crores or Shub Mangal Zyadaa Saavdhan with 32-66 crores or Article 15 with Rs 20-04 crores
The rather quiet run for Doctor G is due to lack of promotion leading up to the release, alongside other factors such as the unusual storyline which did not connect with general audiences and the Diwali festival which was in full swing during November. Going forward, it can be expected that Doctor G will find success at the box office – making Rs 20 crores before ending its first week. Yet, because there are other big ticket releases heading towards theaters (Ram Setu) and (Thank God), respectively set for Oct 25th or Nov 1st – there may only be time left for DoctorG’s business to spike before being overtaken by them.
