Top Gun: Maverick was released this week, starring Tom Cruise. Released 36 years after Top Gun, the studio faced a difficult task in re-igniting an audience’s interest. However, they were able to manage this feat successfully; drawing in USD 248 million [Rs. 1922.08 cr] at the box office on opening day (including international earnings) from over 25 thousand screens internationally and 62 countries worldwide.
Fascinatingly, Top Gun: Maverick generated almost half the revenue from its North American theatrical run at USD 124 million [Rs. 961.04 cr], which was more than enough to supplement the leftover totals made through international distribution channels. Comparatively, when these revenues are considered alongside other recent films (Mission Impossible: Fallout) starring Tom Cruise, it can be seen that there is an almost 28% difference between both movies – enough of a gap for this movie to rank as one of his largest openings yet. Similarly, Paramount Pictures reports that this film has had the second-highest live-action global debut weekend in history; only beaten out by 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.
When it comes to international markets, Top Gun: Maverick has done exceptionally well with the United Kingdom leading with a gross of USD 19.4 million [Rs.150.37cr] from 735 locations, which is twice what Mission: Impossible – Fallout managed for 806 theaters. Coming in second is France where the film collected USD 11.7 million [Rs. 90.68cr] from 790 theaters, surpassing both its predecessors No Time To Die ($9.6M) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout ($8.6M). Claiming third place on the Top 3 market list is Australia where Top Gun: Maverick drew in USD 10.7 million [Rs 1593900cr] from 343 screens; once again besting its predecessor No Time To Die($820000) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout($460000).
As for the other countries, Top Gun: Maverick became the highest opening weekend grossing movie in 32 of the 62 territories (for Tom Cruise) while becoming Paramount Film’s best live action earner in 18 markets. This is where they are estimating it will come to an end after this upcoming weekend – reaching around USD 151 million domestically through North America.
