Two huge commercial successes, with seemingly unending budgets. While the cost for ‘RRR’ could be anywhere from 300-450 crores, there’s no way to know for sure considering how large these numbers are. Even if we take an estimate of 500 crores – that’s still 10 times what was used for ‘The Kashmir Files’. Yet despite this difference in production value, it seems as though ‘both’ ended up bringing in similar returns. Both films totaled around 260 crore rupees each, and were released within two weeks of one another; but because ‘RRR’ made marginally more – it came out on top at 208 crore rupees*. Meanwhile ‘The Kashmir Files’ earned an impressive 249 crore rupees*.
What matters is that for the film industry, this could be a case study of how two movies as different both critically and financially can do equally well at the same time if they are both catering to two different audiences. RRR needs collections from countries in South Asia as well to get into a profitable zone while The Kashmir Files already made it there after its opening weekend; winning people over one by one. It would only make sense if these trends continue – whether you’re doing a major blockbuster or working on something smaller scale – going forward too.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
