After a strong start of Rs. 6.71 crore, Malang saw an uptick in earnings on Saturday. Based on initial estimates, the film grossed between Rs. 8.10 to 9 crores on Day 2 and was projected to exceed Rs 15 crore before Sunday dawned upon us. The great news came all over India where there were multiplexes but single screens still remained low-key throughout both days respectively. For films such as these one could go back to Marjaavaan – where it did significantly better than Sidharth Malhotra’s movie at different types of theaters–but this time around they’re doing just slightly worse
This was a great sign for this film – it seems that people are excited about what they’re watching. But now, after the first movie weekend is over, we need to see if this excitement will continue through next week or not. There are some key points to consider here though – first of all, the election closures in Delhi may affect this movie’s performance there. Secondly, Mumbai had much higher participation than any other area because its citizens speak Hindi and have strong cultural ties with Bollywood films. Finally, many big theaters chains such as PVR Cinemas and INOX contribute about fifty-five percent of the movie’s current earnings so far – which means they play an important role in promoting movies within India.
Malang is set to exceed its last week’s collections on Sunday and might meet its potential for opening weekend earnings. However, a successful Monday is vital to the film’s success because if it fails, then profits won’t be realized at all. It all comes down to what happens on Monday – if people turn out in full force, than we can expect more numbers coming soon after that.
The new releases of this week are looking strong too though so Malang will have tough competition going head-to-head with them which means most of the work has to be done before Friday. But who knows? This time around Shikara was doing relatively well on Saturday (around Rs 2 lakhs) while if they continue with their momentum they could have close to 5 lakhs by the end of Sunday which would mean over 6 lakhs altogether in two days! So these numbers sound pretty promising so far which might bode well for Malang.
