Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, opened with an expected range of Rs. 8.75 to 10.50 crore as per early estimates. On its opening day, the film is well on its way to a double digit mark at the box-office, given the 20% boost from the partial holiday due to Maha Shivratri. This is a very impressive start for the film, and all it needs now is a 15% increase in biz for each day over the weekend to reach the target of a total of 35 crore.
Hitesh Kewalya’s directorial project revolves around a homosexual relationship with a comedic approach. This topic has unfortunately been limited in terms of reach to its viewers. Due to its offbeat nature, the response from the ‘mass belts’ was generally unenthusiastic, leaving only the major metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata to bring in the bulk of the revenue. These five cities have collectively accounted for 60% of the business which has largely been generated through national multiplex chains such as PVR, INOX, Cinepolis and Carnival. The film has gained a platform to reach its potential with the figures of the opening day, however, it is the performance of the following weekdays which will decide its success. To earn the ‘successful venture’ tag, the film would need to acquire a lifetime collection of around Rs. 70 crore in order to make the makers profitable. Reviews for the film are rather divided, with some viewers enjoying it and others hating it.
The release of Bhoot: The Haunted Ship this week was met with a rather middling response at the box office, its opening day collections coming in somewhere between Rs. 4.40-5.50 crore. With a partial holiday pushing business along, it is imperative for the movie to record a sizeable jump over the course of the weekend in order to ensure a decent total. A weekend tally of 20 crore would be a satisfactory outcome, with anything below that considered a let–down. For the Vicky Kaushal starrer to be deemed a success, it would have to double its weekend collection in the long run.
The expenses are moderately priced; yet, it needs to get near the 45 crore mark to be called a success. Bhoot is nearly evenly split across multiplexes and single screens, with the latter doing far better than SMZS due to its horror genre. There is a devoted crowd base for the movie, and if they support the film, then the movie will go on the path of success, yet it all comes down to the trends on weekends and how the weekday box office figures hold. The reports about the film have been a combination of positive and negative feedbacks about the second half; for the time being, it’s a game of wait and see.
