This past Friday, two films of contrasting genres and topics released in theaters. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan tackles the subject of homosexuality with a humorous tone, whereas Bhoot – The Haunted Ship presented horror aficionados with an enthralling ride of frights and shocks. Although both of these films were mainly targeting multiplex audiences.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan was predicted to collect in the vicinity of Rs. 8-9 crores on its opening day, and indeed it did slightly better than that as it earned a sum of Rs. 9.55 crores. Even though the film’s genre and theme presented certain limitations, the Mahashivratri partial holiday bolstered the collections by about 10–20%, allowing the movie to come very close to hitting the coveted double-digit mark. Ayushmann Khurrana can be pleased with the response the movie received on its opening day, though the next couple of days will decide if the audience sustenance will remain.
Conversely, Bhoot – The Haunted Ship was expected to bring in box office revenues in the range of Rs. 4-6 crores, with collections falling exactly in the middle at Rs. 5.10 crores. In contrast to the majority of horror films that usually feature a leading female character playing a significant role in the narrative, this particular one primarily focused on Vicky Kaushal, with a haunted ship as the story’s main element. As a result, a reasonable start was predicted and this is what happened. However, the Karan Johar production will need to maintain similar numbers on Saturday if it is to enjoy an even more substantial jump on Sunday, leading to a reasonable overall figure.
