War, starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, had an extraordinary premiere last week. With an opening day collection of Rs. 53.35 crore, it is the highest–grossing film in 2019 so far. It was released on over 4000 screens domestically and its sales have only grown since then; a remarkable feat for its first Monday.
Defying the typical trend of box–office collections falling on Monday after a movie’s initial release, War has continued to draw in audiences and reports state that it could generate approximately Rs. 22 crore on its first Monday. This trend of films usually showing a sharp decrease from Friday to Monday is reflected by previous releases such as Super 30, Saaho, De De Pyaar De, which saw declines ranging from 40%-41%, yet War’s strong performance may just result in either an increase or merely a marginal drop when compared to Uri – The Surgical Strike and Chhichhore which increased 28% and 10% respectively.
War has exceeded expectations and made a resounding impact on its audiences. Reports have indicated that the movie has maintained a steady rise in popularity across multiplexes, mass dominated sectors and single screens, especially in Northern India where some cinemas even added extra screenings to cope with high demand. Current trends suggest that War could even surpass its collection numbers from Friday despite the reduction in ticket prices.
