भैया दूज पौराणिक कथा:
भैया दूज के संबंध में पौराणिक कथा इस प्रकार से है। सूर्य की पत्नी संज्ञा से 2 संतानें थीं, पुत्र यमराज तथा पुत्री यमुना। संज्ञा सूर्य का तेज सहन न कर पाने के कारण अपनी छायामूर्ति का निर्माण कर उन्हें ही अपने पुत्र-पुत्री को सौंपकर वहाँ से चली गई। छाया को यम और यमुना से अत्यधिक लगाव तो नहीं था, किंतु यमुना अपने भाई यमराज से बड़ा स्नेह करती थीं।
यमुना अपने भाई यमराज के यहाँ प्राय: जाती और उनके सुख-दुःख की बातें पूछा करती। तथा यमुना, यमराज को अपने घर पर आने के लिए भी आमंत्रित करतीं, किंतु व्यस्तता तथा अत्यधिक दायित्व के कारण वे उसके घर न जा पाते थे।

एक बार कार्तिक शुक्ल द्वितीया को यमराज अपनी बहन यमुना के घर अचानक जा पहुँचे। बहन के घर जाते समय यमराज ने नरक में निवास करने वाले जीवों को मुक्त कर दिया। बहन यमुना ने अपने सहोदर भाई का बड़ा आदर-सत्कार किया। विविध व्यंजन बनाकर उन्हें भोजन कराया तथा भाल पर तिलक लगाया। जब वे वहाँ से चलने लगे, तब उन्होंने यमुना से कोई भी मनोवांछित वर मांगने का अनुरोध किया।
यमुना ने उनके आग्रह को देखकर कहा भैया! यदि आप मुझे वर देना ही चाहते हैं तो यही वर दीजिए कि आज के दिन प्रतिवर्ष आप मेरे यहाँ आया करेंगे और मेरा आतिथ्य स्वीकार किया करेंगे। इसी प्रकार जो भाई अपनी बहन के घर जाकर उसका आतिथ्य स्वीकार करे तथा इस दिन जो बहन अपने भाई को टीका करके भोजन खिलाये, उसे आपका भय न रहे। इसी के साथ उन्होंने यह भी वरदान दिया कि यदि इस दिन भाई-बहन यमुना नदी में डुबकी लगाएंगे तो वे यमराज के प्रकोप से बचे रहेंगे।

यमुना की प्रार्थना को यमराज ने स्वीकार कर लिया। तभी से बहन-भाई का यह त्यौहार मनाया जाने लगा। भैया दूज त्यौहार का मुख्य उद्देश्य, भाई-बहन के मध्य सद्भावना, तथा एक-दूसरे के प्रति निष्कपट प्रेम को प्रोत्साहित करना है। भैया दूज के दिन ही पांच दीनो तक चलने वाले दीपावली उत्सव का समापन भी हो जाता है।
इस दिन अगर अपनी बहन न हो तो ममेरी, फुफेरी या मौसेरी बहनों को उपहार देकर ईश्वर का आर्शीवाद प्राप्त कर सकते हैं। जो पुरुष यम द्वितीया को बहन के हाथ का खाना खाता है, उसे धर्म, धन, अर्थ, आयुष्य और विविध प्रकार के सुख मिलते हैं। साथ ही यम द्वितीय के दिन शाम को घर में बत्ती जलाने से पहले घर के बाहर चार बत्तियों से युक्त दीपक जलाकर दीप-दान करना भी फलदायी होता है।

Bhaiya Dooj Mythology:
The mythology regarding Bhaiya Dooj is as follows. Surya’s wife Sangya had two children, son Yamraj and daughter Yamuna. Due to not being able to bear the heat of the sun, Sangya created her shadow and handed them over to her son and daughter and went away from there. Chhaya did not have much attachment to Yama and Yamuna, but Yamuna had great affection for her brother Yamraj.
Yamuna would often go to her brother Yamraj’s place and inquire about his happiness and sorrow. And Yamuna would also invite Yamraj to come to her house, but due to busyness and excessive responsibility, he could not go to her house.

Once on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamraj suddenly reached his sister Yamuna’s house. While going to his sister’s house, Yamraj freed the creatures living in hell.Sister Yamuna showed great respect to her brother. Prepared various dishes and fed them and applied tilak on the spear. When they started walking from there, they requested Yamuna to ask for any desired boon.
Seeing his request, Yamuna said Brother! If you want to give me a boon, then give me this boon that every year on this day you will come to my place and accept my hospitality. Similarly, the brother who goes to his sister’s house and accepts her hospitality and the sister who feeds her brother after tika on this day, should have no fear of you. Along with this, he also gave a boon that if brothers and sisters take a dip in Yamuna river on this day, they will be saved from the wrath of Yamraj.

Yamraj accepted Yamuna’s prayer. Since then this festival of sister-brother started being celebrated. The main purpose of Bhaiya Dooj festival is to encourage brother-sister harmony and sincere love for each other. On the day of Bhaiya Duj, the five-day-long Diwali festival also comes to an end.
If there is no sister on this day, then you can get God’s blessings by giving gifts to your cousins, cousins or cousins. The man who eats food from the sister’s hand on Yama Dwitiya, he gets religion, wealth, meaning, life and various kinds of happiness. Along with this, before lighting the lamp in the house in the evening of Yama II, lighting a lamp with four lights outside the house and donating lamps is also fruitful.
