It been a month and a half since the release of 83 and now the Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar film, Badhaai Do, has arrived in theatres across the nation. With some limitations on occupancy due to the night curfews, it is not the most ideal opening for a mid-budget film, but the box office does not have to depend on a bumper or blockbuster success for this movie to keep afloat.
Since it is the only Bollywood release, the film has a fair amount of theaters and screens. However, it is highly unlikely that they will be full on the opening day, since it relies more on word–of–mouth publicity. Furthermore, with its LGBTQ theme, the reach of the film is understandably limited in the beginning.
The beneficialaspect is that the promotion should satisfy its intended audience, so if there’s positive feedback after the premier, it could be an attractive weekend at the box office. This was true even before the pandemic; however, prior to this, the initial income of these types of films used to be around 3 crores whereas presently, the figure could be between 1-2 crores. It is likely that the creators of the film are already conscious of this, and ready to take the next steps.
