The eagerly awaited film Ram Setu starring Akshay Kumar was released last week on Tuesday. Thanks to the festive holiday of Diwali, trade predictions were that this movie would receive a thunderous reception from audiences. But contrary to anticipation, it only had a tepid response in both the domestic and overseas markets. In fact, though there are decent numbers domestically for this movie, business abroad has been very low.
In this box office report, we take a look at how well Ram Setu fares against other Akshay Kumar movies released overseas, and the numbers don’t seem all too promising. Shockingly, even though there was so much hype around this movie coming from Bollywood’s favorite star – it seems it won’t do too well for him in terms of his foreign earnings. With just USD 650k over its extended opening weekend prediction states that the film may only earn about $1M which will put it as Akshay’s lowest earning film till now. In fact, when compared to his previous projects – Rohit Shetty’s SOORYAVANSHI is really standing out amongst them all with USD 8.3M across both countries-which is higher than anything else he has done recently!
Akshay Kumar’s Post-pandemic releases in overseas
Sooryavanshi – 8.3 mil. USD
Bachchhan Paandey – 1.80 mil. USD
Samrat Prithviraj – 1.20 mil. USD
Raksha Bandhan – 1.10 mil. USD
Ram Setu – 1 mil. USD [lifetime expected]
If that was not enough, when compared to Akshay’s releases before the Covid-19 pandemic, the actor’s overseas collections graph has been seeing a steady downward spiral. Except for Sooryavanshi, which had collected USD 8.3 million, the collections in overseas markets of his new releases seem to be touching a new low and plateauing between 1 to 2 mil. USD mark. In fact, a quick glance at Akshay’s pre-pandemic releases depicts a more optimistic business trend.
Akshay Kumar’s Pre-pandemic releases in overseas
Good Newwz – 10.41 mil. USD
Housefull 4 – 6.86 mil. USD
Mission Mangal – 7.28 mil. USD
Kesari – 3.60 mil. USD
As of now, Ram Setu continues to run in theatres; however, predictions state that the business of the film is unlikely to see much growth. Going further with new releases set to hit screens, trade opines that the business of Ram Setu is all but done with in the overseas markets.
