Due to its all-inclusive resorts, Punta Cana on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic attracts repeat visitors. Those are mistakes because this beachfront city’s magic is in locals’ secret caves, clear lagoons, and hot nightclubs. Wandering is more fun.
Locals and Tripadvisor users helped us plan a three-day beach vacation with thrilling activities. This itinerary and insider tips will give you local Punta Cana experience.
DAY 1
Early morning beaches and breakfas
Today is beach day. Enjoy breakfast on the beach in lively Los Corales. Bagels, smoothies, and breakfast burritos are international, but Dominican coffee makes them local.
Walk east to the beach after breakfast. All public Punta Cana beaches are blocked by hotels, making access difficult. There’s a good entrance to the left of Jellyfish Restaurant. Find the Bavaro Beach alley. Another entrance is five minutes from Kats Corner, next to Zoho’s Beach Club.
Expired passport renewal procedures vary by country. Typically, you submit a renewal application, provide documentation, and pay fees.
Club vibes in afternoon
Visit white-sand Bavaro Beach in the afternoon before sunset. If hungry, take a short cab south to Pearl Beach Club, which has pools, beach service, DJs, and foam parties. You can buy drinks and food (fried fish with coconut creole sauce and tostones) from $30 for a beach lounger to $300 for a Balinese bed by the pool. Four to six hours with kids are fun at the kiddie pool and park.
Playa Blanca, a Traveler’s Choice beachfront winner without a pool, is more relaxed. No entrance fee, $40 food/cocktail minimum. Tripadvisor reviewers love the ceviche and Playa Blanca Julep with rum, mint, ginger, and pineapple juice.
Evening: Island theater
Coco Bongo Show & Disco in downtown Punta Cana will be open late tonight, so rest up. Imagine live theater and Cirque du Soleil. For four to five hours, you’ll dance, sing, and party while watching the show. Although the club is 18+, parents should take their children to the front of the theater where dancers make balloon figures.
Coco Bongo sells entrance tickets, but weekend tables sell out weeks in advance, so book online. Locals recommend VIP ($165) for a guaranteed seat and better aerial show views. Standing-room tickets cost $70. A VIP ticket gets you free drinks all night.
DAY 2
Beach action in morning
Macao Beach north of downtown Punta Cana attracts sports fans. Local operators offer wave riding and off-road dune buggy tours. The best adventure is Cueva Taina Macao, a 26-foot-deep crystal blue lagoon underground cave. Swim in cold water to cool off. Avoid crowds at this free event by arriving early.
A stunning afternoon photo shoot
After visiting the beach, climb the 1,000-foot Montaña Redonda in Miches, an hour northwest of Punta Cana. Enjoy Samana Bay and Oriental Mountains views. Want an epic Instagram pic? Look like you’re swinging off the mountain in photos on a swing, hammock, or broom. Without a guided tour, Miches is a long drive from downtown Punta Cana. Rent a car or arrange roundtrip transportation with a driver. Swim at Playa Esmeralda on the way back from Miches.
Evening: Rockout
Go to Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in downtown Punta Cana tonight. A great way to experience an all-inclusive without staying there. If you say, “I’m here for the casino,” they usually let you in. Your bracelet only grants casino access, no free food, drinks, or pools. Feel like dancing? Hard Rock’s Oro nightclub is open to the public. It’s dark and glamorous like Vegas or Miami.
Day Three
Local coffee in the morning
Both options are for your last Punta Cana day. Have kids? The Nickelodeon Resort, an all-inclusive, has Punta Cana’s best water park. Explore the tiny offshore islands of Isla Saona and Isla Catalina.
For family-friendly breakfast, visit Dalia’s Café and Bakery. This cheerful cafe serves croissants, pastries, and foamy cappuccinos. It goes to Nickelodeon in Uvero Alto north of Macao Beach.
Choose island adventure? Starting the day with Saona Café coffee. The café faces the embarcadero de Saona, where dozens of boat and tour operators operate. Negotiate a trip without booking with a captain here. Private boat tours for two cost $300, while group tours start at $90.
Island or SpongeBob for afternoon.
An idyllic island with palm huts and under 1,000 residents, Saona didn’t get electricity until 2022. For a complete Caribbean vacation, visit here. Day trippers can swim, eat, and socialize on the beach. The uninhabited Isla Catalina has stunning scenery and clear waters. Island tours usually include lunch and snorkeling.
Nickelodeon is $100 for adults and $59 for children (food is $39 and $25 for kids 3 and up). The thrilling water park has an enormous Nickelodeon blimp, slime area, water guns and cannons, and a lazy river with dozens of inner tubes for parents to ride with cocktails. SpongeBob and Dora will greet you on the grounds. Punta Cana resorts serve great food.
Evening: A culinary highlight
End the day at Noah, downtown Punta Cana’s best restaurant. It won Traveler’s Choice for its extensive Asian-fusion menu and talented, attentive staff. Try spicy tuna and salmon rolls and crab-stuffed starfish ravioli. For a successful Punta Cana long weekend, drink a caipirinha.
