How Long Does a 510-Thread Battery Take to Charge?

When you use any battery-powered device, you’re going to spend a significant amount of time charging it. That’s just the way things work with batteries – they never last quite as long as you’d like them to. It’s valuable to know how long a device should take to charge, though – and that’s particularly true with a vaping device because you want to know how long you’ll need to wait until you can vape again.

So, how long does a 510 thread battery take to charge? The answer to this question is actually pretty simple because it’s just a function of the battery’s capacity and the rate at which it charges.

Understanding the Charging Time of a 510-Thread Battery

A battery’s capacity is measured in milliampere-hours or mAh, and a battery’s charging speed is measured in amperes or milliamperes. People usually shorten “amperes” to “amps,” and there are 1,000 milliamps in one amp.

    • If a 510-thread battery has a capacity of 1,000 mAh and charges at a rate of one amp, that means it takes one hour to charge.

If you’re using a battery with a different capacity or a different charging speed, you just need to adjust the calculation to determine how long your battery should take to charge. If a battery has a capacity of 600 mAh and charges at one amp, for instance, that means it’ll charge in 60 percent of an hour – or about 36 minutes. If the battery charges at .5 amp, the charging time is doubled. If the battery charges at two amps, the charging time is cut in half.

Now that you understand how long a vape battery should take to charge, you may be left with more questions. How do you know if you’re charging your battery properly? What does it mean if your battery doesn’t seem to charge in the correct amount of time – and what should you do if your battery doesn’t seem to be charging at all?

In this article, we’re going to answer those questions. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll know everything you’ve ever wanted to know about how to charge a 510-thread battery properly and what to do if things aren’t working as they should.

How Do You Charge a 510-Thread Battery Properly?

Understanding how to charge a 510-thread battery is simple. If things are working correctly, there’s really no effort required here at all.

    • Connect the battery to your computer’s USB port. Some cart batteries have USB ports for charging. Others use proprietary chargers that screw into their threading.
    • Watch the indicator light on the battery or charger to confirm that the battery is charging. The light should turn on while the battery charges.
    • Check the light periodically to see if the battery is done charging. When a vape battery is fully charged, the light will turn off or change to a different color.

What Should You Do if Your 510-Thread Battery Isn’t Charging?

Charging a cart battery may be easy, but troubleshooting a battery that isn’t charging is a bit more difficult. If your vape battery doesn’t light up when you connect it to the charger, you should first try using the device to make sure that the battery isn’t actually dead. The light shouldn’t illuminate if the battery is already fully charged. If you’re certain that the battery isn’t charging, here’s what you should do.

If Your Vape Battery Charges Through a USB Port:

    • Connect the device to your computer. If you’re already trying to charge the device through your computer, try a different USB port.
    • Replace the USB cable. USB cables wear out fairly quickly with daily use, and replacing the cable usually fixes a 510-thread battery that isn’t charging.
    • Use a toothpick to remove dust and lint from the USB port.

If Your Vape Battery Charges Through the 510 Threading:

    • Connect the device to your computer. If you’re already trying to charge the device through your computer, try a different USB port.
    • Check to see if oil has leaked out of the cartridge and contaminated the device’s threading. If oil is stuck in the threading, use a cotton swab moistened with rubbing alcohol to clean it. You may also need to clean the contact point on your charger.
    • Replace the charger. Note that there are many 510-threaded battery chargers on the market, and they don’t all have exactly the same specifications. You should replace the charger only with an identical one from the same manufacturer.

What Should You Do if Your 510-Thread Battery Charges Too Quickly or Too Slowly?

If you have a 510-thread battery that seems to be charging too quickly or too slowly, the first thing that you should do is connect the device to your computer because wall adapters can sometimes produce unpredictable results.

    • If you’re connecting a battery that’s designed to charge with a one-amp current to a half-amp charger, the battery’s charging time will be doubled. A pleasant side effect of this scenario, though, is that the battery will produce less heat while charging and may last longer as a result.
    • If you’re connecting your battery to a high-speed charger for a mobile phone or tablet, the battery may charge more quickly than expected. This can cause the battery to overheat. If you’re going to use a wall charger, make sure that it’s approved by the battery’s manufacturer and charges the battery at the correct voltage and amperage.

Every 510-thread battery has a finite life and will eventually stop holding a useful charge. If you have a battery that seems to finish charging as soon as you connect it to the charger, it’s possible that the battery has reached that point. If your battery shows either of these symptoms, it’s probably time to recycle it.

    • The battery finishes charging almost immediately when you connect it to the charger, but it dies almost immediately when you try to use it.
    • The battery lights up when you connect it to the charger, but it never seems to finish charging regardless of how long you wait.
