The introduction of cryptocurrencies carried new technologies and innovations to the financial world, setting the scene for decentralised finance (DeFi) to thrive amidst the cutting-edge solutions these currencies provide.

Users are often faced with terms like blockchain, smart contracts and crypto wallets that are essentials for crypto traders. Bitcoin Forks are one important element for blockchain development.

This concept aligns perfectly with the notion of cryptocurrencies, such as decentralisation and shared control for users. So, what does blockchain forks mean? Let’s explain in the following.

    Understanding Bitcoin Forks

Blockchains were built on the concept of distribution of control and managing power to all users without having a central authority that supervises and controls the transactions. Thus, operations are conducted in peer-to-peer networks using blockchain capabilities.

Decentralisation entails the collective agreement on developing the network and getting consensus before introducing new changes or policies to a given blockchain. Thus, when the crypto community agrees on the implementation of a certain blockchain change, these updates are introduced in what’s called “Blockchain Forks”.

Several Bitcoin Forks were introduced over time, improving transaction speed or enhancing some elements of the blockchain operations as suggested by Bitcoin users.

    Types of Forks

Two types of forks can be introduced to the Bitcoin blockchain these are:

    • Soft Fork: Soft forks are slight changes to the processes or updates in the services without major introductions.
    • Hard Fork: Hard forks are more sophisticated changes that carry the introduction of new currencies or the release of new tokens.

    Why Are BTC Forks Important?

Cryptocurrencies involve advanced technologies and robust development efforts by independent teams who maintain the network and introduce changes and updates to keep pace with the fast-changing nature of the market.

The developers may suggest pushing a soft fork into the blockchain to improve network security and enhance working protocols and features.

On the other hand, hard forks carry holistic changes like introducing a new currency when the need arises for a new code system or minting standards. Hard fork changes may require users to change their currencies or switch to a new tokenomics, for example.

    Conclusion

Bitcoin forks are changes that developers introduced to the network and agreed upon by crypto communities. These changes come as soft or hard forks to keep up with the market dynamics.

Soft forks introduce updates to the system or working features, while hard forks can bring new cryptocurrencies or changes in the minting protocol.
