Most Successful IPL Team: Ranking Every Franchise

Chennai Super Kings are the most successful IPL team when titles, final appearances and long-term win rate are assessed together through IPL 2026. They share the record of five championships with Mumbai Indians, but CSK reached more finals and held a higher win percentage across their 17 IPL appearances. Mumbai remain close behind, while Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru complete a clearly distinguished top four.

How the IPL franchises are ranked

A title is the clearest measure of success, so championships come first in this ranking. Final appearances are the next separator because reaching the final repeatedly reflects a team’s ability to perform through an entire league stage and knockout run. Overall win percentage provides a useful third measure, particularly when teams have identical title and final records.

The figures below cover IPL results through the 2026 season. Win percentages account for the result percentage method used in the statistical record: no-results are excluded, while tied matches count as half a win regardless of the outcome of a subsequent Super Over. This makes the numbers more meaningful than simply dividing victories by total fixtures.

    2Mumbai Indians5653.95%

    9Delhi Capitals0146.57%
    10Lucknow Super Giants0047.88%

    1. Chennai Super Kings: the strongest overall case

Chennai Super Kings won the IPL in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Beyond matching Mumbai’s five-title tally, their record of 10 final appearances gives them a remarkable level of sustained success. CSK were runners-up in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019, meaning they appeared in the title match in 10 of their 17 seasons through 2026.

Their overall record also supports the top position. CSK won 148 of 267 matches and recorded a 55.84% win percentage through 2026, according to ESPNcricinfo’s team statistics. That is the best rate among the established franchises that have played across a long IPL history. The team’s 2026 finish of eighth does not erase a body of work defined by regular title challenges.

    Why CSK edge Mumbai

There is a reasonable argument for Mumbai Indians, particularly because they have more total match wins. However, success is not just about volume. Chennai’s additional four final appearances and superior win percentage offer the narrow but meaningful difference between two franchises that have set the league’s historical standard.

    2. Mumbai Indians: five titles and the most wins

Mumbai Indians won five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. They were also runners-up in 2010, making six final appearances in total. Their five championships came in an eight-season stretch, a period of trophy-winning consistency unmatched by any other side in a shorter timeframe.

Through IPL 2026, Mumbai had played 291 matches and won 155, both league records. Their 53.95% win percentage placed them second among the long-established sides in the table. The 2026 season ended with Mumbai in ninth place, but their long-term record remains formidable because no franchise had accumulated more match victories.

For readers assessing fixtures, form and historical match-ups, headline records can be a useful starting point, while day-specific context such as team balance and recent results matters too. That is why searches around who will win today match often require more than a franchise’s all-time title tally.

    3. Kolkata Knight Riders: three titles across different eras

Kolkata Knight Riders sit third with titles in 2012, 2014 and 2024. They also reached the 2021 final, giving them four overall appearances in the IPL’s biggest match. Three championships place KKR comfortably ahead of every franchise outside the CSK-MI pair and demonstrate their ability to rebuild into title contenders over time.

KKR’s win percentage was 51.44% after IPL 2026, built on 140 wins from 279 matches. That rate puts them ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad among active teams with extensive IPL histories. Their 2026 campaign ended in seventh place, but the 2024 triumph ensured that their recent legacy remains that of a championship-winning team.

    4. Royal Challengers Bengaluru: finals depth and a new title era

Royal Challengers Bengaluru won back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026, becoming only the third franchise after Chennai and Mumbai to successfully defend an IPL championship. Before that breakthrough, RCB had reached the final in 2009, 2011 and 2016, which means they had made five final appearances overall.

That total of five finals is better than KKR’s four, but RCB rank fourth because they have two titles compared with KKR’s three. Their overall numbers remained competitive: 143 wins in 287 matches and a 51.23% win percentage through 2026. The two recent titles changed the conversation around the franchise, turning years of final losses into a record of repeat championship success.

    5. Sunrisers Hyderabad: one crown, three finals

Sunrisers Hyderabad have one title, won in 2016, but their three final appearances give them the advantage over the other one-time champions. They were runners-up in 2018 and 2024, creating a record that reflects more than a single outstanding campaign. That depth is why SRH place fifth in this ranking.

Across 211 IPL matches through 2026, SRH won 102 and had a 49.04% win percentage. They entered the league in 2013, so their sample is smaller than those of original franchises such as Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. Still, their final appearances in separate periods show the capacity to remain relevant as squads and playing styles evolved.

    6. Gujarat Titans: the highest win percentage

Gujarat Titans are the statistical outlier in this list. They won the championship in their debut season of 2022 and were runners-up in 2023, producing two finals in their first five IPL appearances. They had also won 47 of 77 matches through 2026, for a league-leading 61.03% win percentage.

That percentage is outstanding, but it requires context. GT had played far fewer matches than the longstanding franchises, so their title count and final total remain the primary limits on their ranking. A first title, an immediate second final and the best win rate nonetheless make Gujarat one of the most efficient starts by any IPL franchise.

    7. Rajasthan Royals: the inaugural champions

Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural IPL in 2008 and returned to the final in 2022, where they finished runners-up. Their two final appearances match Gujarat Titans, but GT’s significantly stronger win percentage moves the newer side ahead. Rajasthan’s 50.20% rate came from 123 wins in 252 matches through 2026.

RR’s place in the middle of the table illustrates the difficulty of using titles alone. The 2008 triumph guarantees a significant place in IPL history, yet the long gap before their next final means they do not have the repeated late-stage record of Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, RCB or Sunrisers Hyderabad.

    8. Punjab Kings: finalists without a title

Punjab Kings reached the IPL final in 2014 and 2025 but have not won the competition. Two final appearances put them above Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants in the title-and-finals hierarchy. They had 126 wins in 277 matches, giving them a 46.90% win percentage through IPL 2026.

The distinction between a strong single season and enduring success is especially relevant for teams without titles. Punjab have reached the final twice, which is substantial evidence of competitive peaks, but a title remains the missing achievement that would immediately move them into the next tier of this ranking.

    9. Delhi Capitals: one final appearance

Delhi Capitals, including their earlier IPL record under the Delhi Daredevils name, reached one final through 2026. That came in 2020, when they finished runners-up. They had won 125 of 280 matches for a 46.57% win percentage, narrowly behind Punjab in both percentage terms and final appearances.

The franchise has experienced playoff runs and individual strong seasons, but it has not yet translated those opportunities into a championship. In an all-time ranking, the absence of a title and a single final puts Delhi below Punjab, despite the narrow difference between their overall match records.

    10. Lucknow Super Giants: still establishing their record

Lucknow Super Giants joined the IPL in 2022 and had not reached a final through the 2026 season. They made the Eliminator in both 2022 and 2023, but their best result remained short of the title match. LSG won 34 of 72 matches and had a 47.88% win percentage across their first five appearances.

Their win rate is higher than those of Punjab and Delhi, yet the ranking gives greater weight to title-winning and final-reaching achievement. With a relatively short IPL history, Lucknow have less opportunity than older sides to build a deep knockout record. Their position can change quickly with one sustained title challenge.

    What the ranking shows

The IPL’s history has been shaped most strongly by Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, who hold five championships each. Chennai’s 10 final appearances and higher long-term win percentage make their overall record the most complete. Mumbai’s record number of match wins ensures the debate remains close, while KKR and RCB have built the next strongest championship profiles.

Gujarat Titans have the best win percentage but need longevity to challenge the established leaders. For every other franchise, the next title or final appearance can reshape the middle of the table, which is exactly why the IPL’s all-time success debate remains compelling.
