Ranveer Singh and Kabir Khan’s much-anticipated 83 (Hindi) film opened to a slightly disappointing start since its estimated figures suggested an opening day total of around Rs. 15-16 crore. It performed well at the multiplexes, though didn’t do so hot at single screens – after all, they only registered low occupancy throughout most of the day. Still, it did better in places like Maharashtra and Delhi than other metropolitan cities did during primetime hours.
Their fortunes were boosted thanks to Christmas Eve – big surprise there – yet by nighttime or early morning hours people had finally started catching up with its performance across regions, leading to increased ticket sales during these days leading up until Saturday or even Sunday’s estimate can say something more accurate about what this weekend will hold. For now, some may argue that collections so far have been underwhelming considering how expensive this movie is – but surely come December 25th we’ll see the numbers increase substantially from here on out!
Three major chains contributed around 60% of the total business whereas smaller theaters such as Pushpa showed little to no interest. This could be due to its proximity to other theaters in which the second Friday at Pushpa was higher than it’s opening day for 83. For 83 to succeed, it needs a large jump in revenue from Saturday and Sunday because it has shown an increase over minor competitors but still remains much less popular among other larger movie theaters.
Opening day biz for 83 was impacted mainly due to the competition from Spiderman in the metro areas and Pushpa. Regardless, I am grateful because so far there does not seem to be much of Covid work happening. However, many customers complained about how cold it was in the North which contributed to a loss on opening day earnings.
That combined with other economic factors such as lower food prices are reasons why 83 did relatively well on its first day at box office earnings-wise, making over Rs.1 crore (approx). My suspicions proved true when trailers began circulating online; they were mostly pleasant than negative, especially from metro areas (possible youtube effect?).
