Sunday was a good day at the box office, with the Ranveer Singh starrer 83 and the previously released Hollywood entertainer Spider-Man: No Way Home holding the fort. Keeping the audience engaged over the Christmas weekend both films did well. However, in the case of 83, the box office collections have not really lived up to expectations.
Collecting Rs. 17.41 crore on Sunday Day 3, combined with its Friday collection of Rs. 12.64 crore and Saturday collections of Rs. 16.95 crores, the total business of 83 over its opening weekend stands at Rs. 47 crores despite being just shy of India’s gold standard – Fifty Crore Rupees which is nearly fifty million rupees or US $770K AUD; which amounts to approximately what a typical blockbuster might earn globally in the first few days (even though Indian movies are cheaper). If there was any good news coming out this past week for Indian cinema- it would have been that footfalls were much better than they had ever been before- when people did actually go to theaters to watch movies (rather than spending time watching them illegally).
Today will be an important day because ideally, the revenue from both movie theaters should not go below 30%. With holidays coming up, it would be wonderful if this were true.
