Ranveer Singh’s 83 couldn’t capitalize on the Christmas holiday as it accumulated about Rs. 15.50 to 16.50 crores over two days, leading up to a little under Rs. 30 crore in total after just two days of its release. This figure doesn’t live up to expectations given that an expensive production like 83 was supposed to make at least half of this amount per day (Rs 11-12 crores).
The cinema halls were boosted on day one with people spending around Rs 7-9 crore but dropped down by about 20% on day 2 resulting in less than half what they spent previously (Rs 3-4 crore). In contrast, single screens and theatres outside of India contributed near about 8-10 lakhs per theatre whereas the number rose up by almost 60% (around 13 lakhs) on second day; these figures however still need some work before being able to compete against other cinemas nationwide.
Although the film is expected to reach the Rs. 17 crore mark at small centers, it still won’t be enough to meet the expectations set for a film of this caliber. With its release coinciding with Christmas, we can only expect about Rs. 25 crore; but even that isn’t what was expected from this high-profile project. Critics have been very positive about 83 as well – which could have caused higher than average ticket sales during its opening weekend – but now it will face stiff competition from Jersey and RRR over the next few weeks and possibly shorter shelf life due to mixed feedback from audiences outside major metropolitan areas.
With the release of last year’s most talked about film coming so soon after, 83’s chances for success seem slim. It needs more than just one day to break even; Fridays don’t come easy when you’re fighting against some of Hollywoods biggest movie franchises. With rumours flying around that Covid had resurfaced and we were in danger once again, the show doesn’t go on no matter how hard people try to dress up these facts.
Audiences aren’t too keen to keep themselves confined inside when they could be watching newer releases like Spiderman and Pushpa instead; despite it being their second week here. The combined totals from both films will come out close to Rs13 crores; with Spiderman making nine crores and Pushpa carrying four along-side its brand name successfully riding off its four crore mark into Rs9 crore earnings in two days time. What future awaits poor old83? With such tepid collections, who knows what lies ahead…
