J.R. Ramirez breaks down the Manifest ending
In a recent interview with Netflix Life, J.R. Ramirez discussed the surprising and intriguing journey of Jared and Michaela’s relationship in the final season of Manifest. Ramirez, who shares a long-standing relationship with Melissa Roxburgh off-screen, expressed his joy at finally getting to portray the on-screen relationship fans had been anticipating. He believed that, given everything the characters had experienced, Jared and Michaela would undoubtedly end up together. However, the series threw a curveball, leading to a different outcome.
Balancing the complexity of Drea’s pregnancy and the newfound happiness between Jared and Mick posed a challenge for Ramirez. Even when the characters were together, there was a lingering feeling that something was amiss. Ramirez sensed that something unexpected would occur, but he did not anticipate the finale unfolding the way it did.
Ramirez commended the beautiful ending of Manifest, acknowledging that he hadn’t seen the final edit on screen yet, but the emotional depth and understanding of the characters during the shooting were apparent. The storyline explored the growth of Jared and Michaela, as he constantly yearned for something she ultimately didn’t desire—a family, which he found with Drea. Ramirez praised the show’s execution and hoped that the audience would connect with the ending and accept the absence of a “Jachaela” conclusion. He emphasized that the growth and resolution of the characters’ journeys were indeed beautiful, despite his surprise at how it unfolded.
Shifting the conversation to Jared’s loyalty to the Stones, Netflix Life pointed out that it often got him into trouble. Ramirez humorously agreed, suggesting that Jared needed to find new friends. He jokingly advised his character to expand his social circle, highlighting the consequences of remaining solely connected to the Stones throughout the series.
The interview shed light on Ramirez’s perspective on Jared and Michaela’s relationship and the unexpected direction the finale took. It showcased the complexity of portraying characters’ journeys and the surprises that can arise during the creative process. Manifest fans were given a glimpse into Ramirez’s thoughts and insights, further fueling their discussions and anticipation for the conclusion of the series.
Why do you think Jared has stuck by them for so long?
From day one, there has never been another option for Jared but the Stones. They are his family, his blood. Ben, Michaela, these people mean everything to him. Jared’s unwavering loyalty and dedication to them are evident throughout the entire span of Manifest. He would go to great lengths to protect them, even willing to take a bullet if necessary. This steadfast devotion has been a constant theme in Jared’s character.
However, there have been moments of selfishness on Jared’s part throughout the series. When Zeke entered the picture, a loving and wholesome individual, Jared’s actions may not have always endeared him to the fans. He has walked a fine line between love and hate, eliciting different emotions from viewers. But deep down, his love for Michaela remains unwavering. She will always be the true love of his life, and he sees himself as a persistent presence, akin to a crazy uncle who never goes away.
For Jared, the Stones are his family, and there is an underlying acceptance of this familial bond. It is ingrained in him, and he has never even considered what his life would look like without them. They have been a constant presence, written on the pages of his life story. The idea of Jared without the Stones has never crossed his mind because they are the foundation of his existence.
J.R. Ramirez’s insights offer a glimpse into Jared’s character and his unwavering commitment to the Stones. It emphasizes the deep-rooted connection and the sense of belonging Jared feels towards this chosen family. As the series comes to an end, viewers can reflect on the enduring relationships and bonds that have shaped the characters’ journeys throughout Manifest.
So do you think even though Jared and Drea end up together that Michaela is the love of Jared’s life?
During an interview with Netflix Life, J.R. Ramirez shared his thoughts on Jared and Michaela’s relationship and the unexpected ending of Manifest. Ramirez believed that Michaela would always be the love of Jared’s life due to the experiences they shared together. He recalled a scene at the airport where their emotions were conveyed solely through their eyes, showcasing the depth of their connection. While there was acceptance when Michaela stated that there was someone better for Jared, there was also a sense that they were no longer the same souls after the two and a half hour journey of Flight 828.
Ramirez acknowledged that although Michaela turns to Jared in times of pain and turmoil, it is not the foundation of a healthy, long-lasting marriage. However, he still considered her to be the love of his life. Reflecting on the way the show ended, Ramirez appreciated the imperfect nature of their relationship. He recognized that not every love story has a fairy-tale ending and that sometimes people enter our lives to teach us valuable lessons. Despite their romantic relationship evolving into a deep friendship, Jared and Michaela would always cherish the growth they experienced together.
The interviewer confessed her struggle in choosing between Jared and Zeke, praising both characters and the performances of the actors. Ramirez jokingly admitted to shipping Zeke and Michaela himself, highlighting the complexities of Jared and Michaela’s relationship. He acknowledged that while their dynamic made for compelling television, stability and love were found with Zeke.
Regarding the open-ended nature of the ending and Jared’s continued involvement with Flight 828 in the new reality, Ramirez stated that there were discussions about potential future storylines. However, he believed that the show did an excellent job of providing enough closure. If there were to be a spinoff, Ramirez speculated it could focus on Vance’s character. He mentioned the possibility of exploring the blossoming relationship between Jared and Drea, adding quirks and a different tone to their interactions to give viewers a glimpse into their dynamic.
Ramirez’s insights into Jared’s perspective and the intricacies of his relationships showcased the complexities of human connections portrayed in Manifest. The interview shed light on the bittersweet nature of the series’ ending and left fans contemplating the growth and lessons learned by the characters along their extraordinary journey.
Do you have a favorite moment overall from the series or a favorite trait about Jared that you loved playing?
J.R. Ramirez expressed his belief in loyalty and discussed how he has portrayed loyal characters throughout his career. He acknowledged that while Jared could be selfish at times, there was always a sense of loyalty within him towards his family and Michaela. In the second season, when Jared went undercover, Ramirez enjoyed playing the double agent and eliciting hate mail from viewers who believed he had turned bad. He found it fun and embraced the challenge of making the audience question his character’s intentions. Even in previous roles as thugs, Ramirez aimed to make them likable and loyal.
The most significant and rewarding moment for Ramirez during his journey on Manifest was when they introduced his character’s family. This allowed him to bring his culture to the show and speak his native language, which he found incredibly fulfilling. He expressed gratitude towards showrunner Jeff Rake for giving him the opportunity and praised Carlos, the actor who portrayed his father, for their instant connection. They worked together to ensure the authenticity of the Spanish dialogue, as Ramirez felt that the initial script did not capture the true essence of the language. Their collaboration resulted in a genuine representation of their culture on screen.
Ramirez highlighted the collaborative and ego-free nature of the production, crediting it for the quality of the final product. He emphasized the rare and blessed experience of working with a showrunner and writers who valued input and allowed the actors to contribute to their characters’ development. Bringing a touch of Cubanism to Manifest was a fantastic experience for Ramirez, and he cherished the opportunity to infuse his own cultural background into the show.
What was it like to be directed by both Josh Dallas and Melissa?
NL: Let’s start with Josh. He’s a trooper, incredibly talented, and full of love. He constantly checked in on us and ensured our well-being. He worked hard to understand the vision he had for the episode and it was a joy to witness his excitement and happiness on set. He was like a little kid, and it was really cool.
And the other one, too. At first, I thought it would be a disaster for my girlfriend to tell me what to do while being drunk the entire week. I joked that I would finally get fired. But no, she was amazing. Despite her nerves, she stepped up and delivered a fantastic performance. It was impressive to see her take charge of a predominantly male-dominated set and approach it with clear intentions and specific shots in mind. Both of them brought creativity and a fresh perspective to the table. I believe they have a bright future in directing. It was a fantastic experience to witness them stepping into their roles and excelling at it. I’ve seen a bit of both of their episodes, and they truly did an exceptional job.
Josh and the other director brought their unique talents to the set. Josh’s enthusiasm and dedication were evident in his clear vision, while the other director impressed with her assertiveness and creative approach. They both have promising futures in directing, and it was a pleasure to see them excel in their roles.
What do you hope viewers are going to take away from the series?
J.R.: The way this show wraps up will resonate with everyone because it speaks to the core of humanity. The characters’ dedication and hard work to love each other and persevere through challenges is something that everyone can connect with. In the last 10 episodes, there’s a bit of everything—characters striving to be better, prioritizing love and family. Ultimately, it’s about humanity. The show finds a beautiful balance, providing enough closure while still leaving room for the audience to fill in the blanks.
I hope people feel satisfied and content with the ending because wrapping up a show like this is a tough task. It could have easily turned into a disaster. Look at Lost, for example. I personally didn’t like its ending, and sometimes shows try to do too much. But I think Manifest did a remarkable job of staying grounded, focusing on relationships, love, and allowing the audience to imagine the rest of the story.
Is there anything we can see you in next? What projects do you have coming up?
J.R.: Actually, I took a little break. Right now, I’m focusing on the production side of things. I have a desire to work behind the camera and eventually pursue directing. Although I haven’t caught the directing bug just yet, I’m collaborating with my team to develop a couple of stories. We’re working on getting projects off the ground. Currently, I’m optioning a book and actively involved in producing. I want to delve into creating my own content, shaping my own narratives, and having control over the editing process.
Sometimes, it can be tough when you put in hours of work and the final product doesn’t align with your vision. Thankfully, I haven’t encountered many issues like that with Manifest. So right now, I’m taking a step back and carefully considering my next move. I want to embark on something very different, something that showcases a side of me that hasn’t been seen before.
Well, even if you’re behind the scenes, we’re going to keep supporting you of course!
